Policy on Labor Rights and Union
Introduction
Varendra University is committed to protecting the rights and dignity of all employees. The University ensures that every faculty member, administrative staff member, and support staff member works in a fair, respectful, and safe environment. This policy outlines the University’s commitment to labor rights, fair treatment, and employee representation.
1. Employment Rights
· Every employee shall receive a written employment contract clearly stating job title, duties, working hours, salary, benefits, and terms of employment.
· All employment decisions, including appointment, promotion, and termination, must follow the University’s Service Rules and applicable labor laws.
· Termination or disciplinary action will only occur with due process, fairness, and proper documentation.
· Recruitment and promotion will be conducted through transparent, merit-based procedures, ensuring equal opportunity for all qualified candidates.
2. Fair Wages and Benefits
· Employee salaries shall comply with or exceed the national minimum wage and relevant labor regulations.
· Benefits such as annual leave, sick leave, maternity/paternity leave, and healthcare support will be provided according to University policy and law.
· Salary increments and benefits will be reviewed periodically based on performance, cost of living, and employee feedback.
· Overtime, if applicable, shall be compensated fairly as per labor law provisions.
3. Workplace Safety and Well-being
· The University will provide a safe and healthy work environment through regular inspection, maintenance, and compliance with occupational safety standards.
· Employees shall have access to first aid, emergency procedures, and safety training.
· The University encourages work-life balance by promoting reasonable workloads, flexible scheduling where possible, and support for mental health and well-being.
· Counseling and awareness programs on stress management and mental health will be periodically arranged.
4. Non-Discrimination and Equal Opportunity

5. Grievance and Dispute Resolution

· A Labor Rights Committee will review and resolve disputes in a fair and impartial manner.
· The University ensures that no employee faces retaliation for submitting a genuine grievance.
· In complex or legal matters, employees may seek legal advice or representation as per the University’s policy and labor law provisions.
6. Union and Collective Bargaining Rights
· Employees have the right to form, join, or participate in labor unions or employee associations without fear of discrimination or retaliation.
· The University respects employees’ right to collective bargaining and will engage in open and good-faith discussions with employee representatives.
· Union activities shall be conducted in accordance with national labor laws and University guidelines to maintain institutional harmony and mutual respect.
7. Implementation and Monitoring
· The Human Resources Department will be responsible for implementing, monitoring, and reviewing this policy.
· Regular awareness and training sessions shall be conducted to inform employees about their labor rights and responsibilities.
· Compliance with labor standards will be periodically reviewed, and corrective measures will be taken where necessary.
· This policy will be updated periodically to reflect changes in national labor laws or institutional needs.
