Meet The Editors; Building a Career in Television Journalism: Pathways and Preparations
<p>The Department of Journalism, Communication and Media Studies (JCMS) at Varendra University organized a seminar titled <em>"Building a Career in Television Journalism: Pathways and Preparation."</em> The seminar took place at the university's Senate Hall on Tuesday, April 22 at 3:00 PM.</p> <p>The session featured in-depth discussions on the prospects, preparatory strategies, and challenges of building a career in television journalism. The keynote speakers were Md. Ehsanul Karim Chowdhury, News Editor of Jamuna Television, and Shah Mohammad Mutasim Billah, News Editor of Maasranga Television.</p> <p>The seminar was presided over by JCMS Coordinator Mr. Shatil Siraj, with Varendra University Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Khademul Islam Mollah attending as the chief guest. In his opening speech, the Vice Chancellor emphasized the need for journalism and communication students to stay connected with the practical world of media. He stressed the importance of strengthening ties between academia and the industry.</p> <p>In his keynote address, Jamuna TV&rsquo;s News Editor Md. Ehsanul Karim Chowdhury told students, &ldquo;To succeed in this profession, patience and self-development are crucial. A journalist must have the mindset to learn from daily experiences and strive for constant improvement.&rdquo;</p> <p>Maasranga TV&rsquo;s News Editor Shah Mohammad Mutasim Billah noted, &ldquo;One of today&rsquo;s biggest challenges is practicing ethical journalism without giving in to advertiser pressure. A media professional must often face risks and challenges while working responsibly and standing for justice. However, there is no alternative to honesty and objectivity.&rdquo;</p> <p>Over a hundred students from the JCMS department participated in the seminar. Also present were faculty members Md. Sajjat&nbsp;Hossain, Muhammad Rakib Hussain, Tandra Mondal, Sayed Ibrahim Rifat, Aysha Siddika, and Fatema-Tuz-Johra.</p> <p>The participating faculty members shared motivational insights with the students, saying that such sessions not only complement classroom learning but also serve as a valuable platform for professional inspiration and practical knowledge.</p>

Varendra University Journalism Club held a discussion and quiz on World Press Freedom Day
<div class="container"> <p>On Sunday (May 4) at 3:00 PM, students and faculty members of the Department of Journalism, Communication, and Media Studies at Varendra University participated in this event.</p> <p>This year&rsquo;s theme for World Press Freedom Day was <em>&ldquo;A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis&rdquo;</em>.</p> <p>The discussion session was presided over by the department&rsquo;s coordinator, Md. Satil Siraj. Faculty members Md. Sajjat&nbsp;Hossain, Muhammad Rakib Hussain, Tandra Mondal, Aisha Siddiqa&nbsp;and Fatema-Tuz-Johora spoke at the event. Several students of the department also delivered speeches.</p> <p>Speakers at the event emphasized the importance of a free and independent press. They noted that in today&rsquo;s world, press freedom is being challenged due to information control, political pressure, censorship, and the misuse of artificial intelligence.</p> <p>Md. Satil Siraj stated that the media serves as the mirror of society, and there is no alternative to a free press for ensuring democracy and good governance. He also stressed the importance of freedom of speech and respecting others&rsquo; opinions at the individual level.</p> <p>Md. Sajjat&nbsp;Hossain discussed how journalism and the media are undergoing a massive technological transformation, with artificial intelligence (AI) at its core. AI is adding a new dimension to news gathering, analysis, presentation, and audience engagement. However, while the application of this technology opens many doors of opportunity, it also poses significant ethical, social, and professional challenges.</p> <p>Muhammad Rakib Hussain highlighted the significance of media freedom and encouraged students by saying that they can contribute to ensuring press freedom and fostering human-centered journalism.</p> <p>Tandra Mondal emphasized that instead of controlling technology, it should be regulated under clear policies to protect press freedom. She also stressed the importance of courage and fearlessness in journalism.</p> <p>Aisha Siddiqa&nbsp;remarked that while technology brings both opportunities and challenges, it can never fully replace human capabilities. She underscored the importance of using technology positively in journalism.</p> <p>Fatema-Tuz-Johora emphasized the importance of objective journalism. She also highlighted the ethical considerations of using AI, warning that neglecting these aspects may harm the core principles of journalism.</p> <p>The event concluded with a quiz competition in which students actively participated. Prizes were awarded to the winners by the club president and departmental coordinator, Md. Satil Siraj. The participating students expressed that the event inspired them to think more deeply about press freedom and become more aware of its significance.</p> </div>

Seminar on "Political Economy of Mass Media" by Syed Mizanur Rahman

The event took place in Room 810 and was arranged by the Varendra University Journalism Club.</p> <p>The keynote speaker of the seminar was <strong>Professor Syed Mizanur Rahman</strong>, Dean of the Faculty of Business at Daffodil International University and a distinguished academic. In his speech, he stated, <em>&ldquo;The key to understanding media lies in answering this question: Is the world in your grasp, or are you in the grasp of the world?&rdquo;</em></p> <p>His presentation highlighted contemporary media ownership structures, economic control mechanisms, and the influence of politics on mass media.</p> <p>The seminar was held from <strong>3:30 PM to 5:00 PM</strong><strong>.</strong> At the beginning of the event, Professor Syed Mizanur Rahman was greeted with a bouquet and a token of appreciation.</p> <p>The seminar was presided over by <strong>Mr. Satil Siraj</strong>, Coordinator of the Department of Journalism, Communication, and Media Studies.<br>Also in attendance was <strong>Mr. Suranjit Mondal</strong><strong>,</strong> Registrar of Varendra University, who warmly welcomed the guest and expressed his gratitude on behalf of the university.</p> <p>Faculty members from the department were also present, including <strong>Tandra Mondal, Sayed Ibrahim Rifat, Aisha Siddiqa</strong><strong>, </strong>and<strong> </strong><strong>Fatema-Tuz-Johora</strong><strong>.</strong></p> <p>In the concluding session, closing remarks were delivered on behalf of the faculty by <strong>Tandra Mondal, Sayed Ibrahim Rifat</strong><strong>, </strong><strong>Aisha Siddiqa</strong> and Fatema-Tuj- who expressed heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the guest.</p> <p>The seminar proved to be insightful and inspiring for both teachers and students alike.</p> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <footer class="l-footer"> <div class="l-footer__top">&nbsp;</div> </footer>
