Problems and Prospects of the Standing Committees of Union Parishads in Bangladesh in Ensuring Sustainable Development

In the rush of attaining sustainable development, the widest network and their unique operating tool standing committees can be handy. In this regard this paper tried to illustrate the prospects of standing committees as well as their setbacks by using a qualitative research method Conducting a survey in three Union Parishads and reviewing a host of literature, the paper found that local body has to ensure capacity development and institutional building, decentralization and constitutional protection, removal of weak local governance and enforcing accountability, uprooting traditional corrupted political intentions of the leaders, ensuring access to local data for attaining the goals of SDG. In this circumstance, standing committees hold all the potentials but on the condition of resolving their technical, structural and functional deformity.
