English Department Champions League 2025

The English Department Champions League (EDCL) 2025, organized by the Sports Wing of the Varendra University English Language Club, came to a memorable close on September 4, 2025 at the Varendra University Central Field. The week-long football tournament, held from 30th August to 4th September, showcased passion, teamwork, and sportsmanship among students of the Department of English.

Six teams—Odyssey, Olympians, Titans, Spartans, Inferno, and Invictus—competed for the coveted title. The tournament was formally inaugurated by Professor Md. Shahidur Rahman, Head of the Department of English. After intense group matches and semi-finals, the final showdown featured Olympians and Inferno. The match ended in a tie, pushing the result to a penalty shootout where the Olympians triumphed 3-1, securing the championship.

The semi-finals and the final were refereed by Lecturer, Munif Mahraf, who also serves as Sports In-Charge of the department, ensuring fair play and smooth execution. The tournament concluded with the distribution of crests among the committee members and the referee panel of this tournament, recognizing their invaluable contribution.

The Prize Giving Ceremony was graced by the Chief Guest, Professor Dr. Md. Faizar Rahman, Treasurer, Varendra University, alongside the Department Head, the Chair. Students’ Welfare Counsellor, Abu Zafor Md. Sady (Assistant Professor, Dept. of English), Assistant Proctor Nikhate Jannat Binte Zinnah (Assistant Professor, Dept. of English), and several respected faculty members were also present in the ceremony.

While the Player of the Tournament award was taken home by Mushfiq from Olympians, Shimul from Invictus snatched the Golden Boot award. Apu from Inferno grabbed the Golden Glove award, and for their unmatched sportsmanship and discipline, team Invictus was awarded the Fair Play Trophy.

A heartwarming highlight of the final was the participation of children from “Chotto Shopno”, who walked as mascots for the team members for the final. They were gifted educational supplies and refreshments, under the supervision of Assistant Proctor Nikhate Jannat Binte Zinnah. The joyful presence of these little doves added a memorable social touch to the sporting event.

The EDCL 2025 not only celebrated football but also strengthened the spirit of unity and leadership within the department. The Sports Wing of the English Language Club hopes that this tradition will be continued with even greater enthusiasm in the coming years.
